The GRE Verbal Reasoning section is designed to test your reading and language skills. The section will have vocabulary questions where you will have to choose the appropriate words for the given sentence based on the context and reading comprehension questions where you will have to parse the main ideas and interpreting details in the passage.

The GRE sections consist of 40 questions which are split into sections of 20 questions. The unique quality of this section is that it is section adaptive. Your performance in the first 20 question subsection will determine the difficulty level in the second 20 question subsection.

The GRE has two Verbal Reasoning sections. Each section has 20 Questions. The sections must be completed in 30 minutes. The scores for the Verbal Reasoning section can range from 130-170 points.

The Verbal Reasoning section has always been the most daunting for GRE test takers. Remember the Verbal Reasoning section is not a test of the English language or Vocabulary, rather it is a test of Logic and Reasoning using your language abilities. Students can get a reasonably good score on the Verbal section with the right approach in mastering the skills needed for this section.

Scoring well in the vocabulary section of the GRE exam will seem far-fetched for students who are non-native speakers of the English language. If you are one of them the fact is doing well in the vocabulary section of the GRE exam can boost your overall GRE score.

If you make attempts to prepare for the vocabulary section of the GRE well in advance. Then there is nothing to stop you from acing this section. Here are some valuable tips for getting good scores in this section.

Reading: Develop the habit of reading good books, journals, and newspapers. Pay attention to words you don’t know. Note them down and look up their meanings. Make a flashcard for unknown words and write down their meaning so that you can learn these words. You can carry them around with you and learn the words when you are commuting or waiting in a queue.

Learn contextual usage of words: Your learning will be effective if you can learn whole phrases or sentences rather than individual words. This is because learning just the word will not help you know the right way to use it.

Learn the root words: Most of the words in English have root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Getting to know the common root words will help you learn a lot of words quickly, and it will also help you make the correct guesses during the test, about the meaning of new words.

Word clusters: Learning through word clusters involves grouping the words according to a discipline, a subject or a topic.

When practicing for the vocabulary test of the GRE, set a reasonable goal of learning twenty new words every day while continuing to revise the words you have already learned.
