The Office for National Statistics, one of UK’s providers of official statistics, said that immigration was crucial to keep the service sector of the United Kingdom healthy.

More than 1.5 million migrants, mostly from Eastern Europe, who were employed in service sectors put in more hours and are paid lower salaries than other workers, with some of them being over-educated for their jobs.

In fact, the statisticians say that these people account for 14 percent of the total workforce in hotels and restaurants and in the wholesale and retail trade.

They are also said to be crucial to financial and business services they account for 12 percent of the workforce.

Apart from that, they also form the backbone of the public sector where 701,000 immigrants work in education, public administration and health sectors.

The Guardian quotes the ONS analysis as showing that migrants are more often employed in jobs where they are more overqualified than their UK counterparts.

Anna Bodey, a migration analyst for the ONS, said that this analysis shows how important international migration was for the British labour market. It is vital for sectors of wholesale, hospitality, retail, health and public administration in which 1.5 million immigrants are employed, she said.
