Working in the United Kingdom under a student visa

In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic many countries have introduced immigration changes which are forcing many students to reconsider their study abroad plans. But provisions that will allow international students to stay on in the country on post-study work visa can make many consider a study abroad option.

In view of this the decision by the UK to renew the post-study work visa for international students, more people will now be willing to go to study in the UK.

With the post-study work visa, international students can now work or look for work in any career or position of their choice for two years after completing their graduation. This two-year post-study work visa was earlier scrapped in 2012 and has been renewed and will come into effect from 2021.

Post-study work visa details

Those with valid UK immigration status who have completed an undergraduate level course at any UK Higher Education Provider are entitled to this UK post-study visa for work.

This enables foreign students to look for jobs for up to two years after graduation. This post-study UK work visa is also known as the “Graduate route”

They will be able to obtain their skilled work visa after the two years, if they find a job that meets the skill requirements.

Under the new policy, the visas would have no number limit and would allow graduates to apply for jobs irrespective of their skills or the subject they were studying. This rule is intended to help UK employers hire talented students in fields such as math, engineering and technology.

Impact of the two-year post study work visa

The reinstatement of the two-year post-study work visa is seen as a step in the right direction to provide access to the UK job market to foreign graduates in the country.

The two-year period will be crucial and will give them the much-required time to weigh their options and find the right job opportunities in the UK.

UK employers can take advantage of this facility and recruit entry level workers with the right qualifications.

The reintroduction of the post-study work visa is expected to reinstate the UK as a top study abroad destination. Till 2012 the UK post-study work visa was regarded as a ticket to employment and then migration by international especially those from India and China.Itsrollback created losses for the UK economy and decreased the appeal of the country as a top study abroad destination and made it difficult for UK employers to make use of easily accessible talent which is graduates from the country’s universities.

The reinstatement of the post-study work visa has put the UK in reckoning as a favored study abroad destination for international students. This visa option will make individuals consider the UK for higher studies once the Coronavirus pandemic is over.
